The choice of using a barcode system is your choice. However, if you are a importer/distributor and are selling into retail stores then you will need an EAN barcode. You would need to contact GS1 on this. Also check with the stores/store if the product/s you are supplying, needs to be in accordance with GS1. Smaller stores may tell you that you do not need it.

If you are not selling into retail stores, then as mentioned above, this is a choice that is not mandatory. However, there are definate benefits to barcoding for any organisation.

Benefits include;

• Business efficiencies increased due to no data entry and almost negating human error.
• Better stock control – more efficient stocktakes, receipting, picking & dispatching.
